Mary Walbert Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Walbert, 73, of Batesville, died Wednesday April 24, 2019.  She was born in Batesville, AR on April 25, 1945.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harrell and Roberta Walbert, of Batesville, AR.  She is survived by a sister, Martha Nelle Walbert Twitty, a niece, Elizabeth Handford Bunch (Vernon), a niece Laura Twitty Roach, and two great-nephews Taylor Handford and Dane Roach.

She was of the Methodist faith and a member of Central Avenue United Methodist Church.  She graduated from Batesville High School in 1962.  She spent most of her adult life in Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas where she sold real estate before returning to Arkansas in 2007 to live out her remaining years.

While in Texas she became immensely involved in volunteering and raising money for Omega House, a hospice for terminally ill patients.  In 1989 she received the Diana Award for outstanding community service.  In 1996 she went to Washington D.C. and volunteered for The Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt.  In 1997 she was recognized as one of the founding members of A Christmas Songfest by the Design Industries Foundation Fighting AIDS.  When she returned to Arkansas she went to work part-time working in second-hand stores that benefited the Arkansas Sheriff Youth Ranches and Family Violence Prevention.

Her love for people, caring for others, and enjoying life with her own unique sense of humor will not be forgotten.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Omega House, 602 Braynard St., Houston, Texas 77006 or Central Avenue United Methodist Church, Batesville, AR.

A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, May 11, 2019 at 2:00 p.m. at Central Avenue United Methodist Church, Batesville, AR
