Joseph Youngblood Calhoun, Jr. passed away Monday, January 25th, 2016 in Batesville Hospital. Joe was born January 5th, 1935 in West Carroll Parish, Louisiana to Joe & Estelle Calhoun. He graduated from Strong High School in Strong, AR, received his B.S. from the University of South Carolina and an MBA from Barry College in Miami, FL. He served honorably in the US Navy and had a career of 36 years with the Federal Aviation Administration, including two tours in Vietnam in the 1960s. He and his wife of four decades, Freida Winnell, retired to Batesville in 1990. In retirement he enjoyed a second career as a real estate appraiser. Joe was a world traveler, avid reader and amateur historian. He also relished his role as a Sunday School teacher at First United Methodist Church of Batesville, where he and Winnell have been members for 25 years. In addition to Winnell, he is survived by his son Joe Y. Calhoun, III and his wife Fay of Miami and their daughter Alexandra of Chicago; his daughter Roseanne and her husband John Landy and their children Michael, Brianna and Mary all of Memphis, TN; his brother Thomas Calhoun and his wife Shirley of Cabot; his sister Annette Pagan of Little Rock; his great grandchildren Johnathon, Tessa, Lelah and Kara, several nieces and nephews, a lifetime of friends and his beloved Scottish Terrier, Rudy. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Robert Calhoun and a sister Susan Johnson. A service and celebration of Joe's life will be held Saturday, January 30th, 2016 at 1:00 PM at First United Methodist Church of Batesville with Reverend Justin Ledbetter officiating. A private interment will be held in Cave City later that day under the direction of Willis Funeral Home of Batesville.
