Obituary

Dorothy Mae Stone, 90, of Batesville passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at a local hospital. She was born June 2, 1924 at Calico Rock, Arkansas to parents, Frank R. Stone and Roxie Brown Stone. She grew up in Calico Rock and graduated from Calico Rock High School. After graduating, she moved to Batesville where she attended Arkansas College. When the U.S. entered World War II, Dorothy moved to Wichita, Kansas where she worked for Boeing Aircraft. She took great pride in helping build B-17 and B-29 bombers for the war effort. After the war, she worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company in Wichita before moving to Little Rock where she briefly continued to work for the phone company until taking a job with the Credit Bureau of Greater Little Rock where she remained until 1961. In 1962, Dorothy moved to Slidell, Louisiana and began a career with the Louisiana Department of Tourism where she remained until her retirement in 1988. She remained in Louisiana for the next ten years before moving to Batesville in 1998 where she lived until her death. She had a great love for art, especially painting as well as her beloved pet companions over the years. She was preceeded in death by her parents, stepmother, Elizabeth Woodcock Stone, and sister, Mildred Stone Handford. She is survived by her nephew, Bart Handford and fiance Ginger Jeffery of Little Rock, nephew Benjamin Stone Handford of Washington, D.C., niece Anne Handford Mills and husband, Jeffrey of Hughesville, Maryland, nephew, Brant Handford and wife Kathy of Batesville, cousins, Frank W. Oliver and wife Oneta of Salem, Arkansas, Lillian Wayne Studdard of Neosho, MO, Lavaun Bushnell and her husband Don also of Neosho, MO and friend, Linda Furrow of Batesville. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Calico Rock. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to The Calico Rock Museum, 104 Main Street, Calico Rock, AR 72519.
