David Bruce Gillis Sr., 73, of Newark, Arkansas, passed away on June 9, 2026. He was born on February 11, 1953, in Sanger, California.
David was a man of many talents and interests who enjoyed keeping his hands and mind busy. He loved playing his guitar, woodworking, and creating small shops and houses. He especially enjoyed modifying and building knife handles, always finding ways to improve or personalize the things around him. David had a passion for puzzles and brain teasers, particularly abstract challenges that kept him thinking. Known for his gift of conversation, he never missed an opportunity to share a joke and bring laughter to those around him. He also enjoyed tattoo artistry and cherished the friendships he made throughout his life.
More than anything, David was a true people person. He never met a stranger and enjoyed visiting with everyone he encountered. He had a generous heart and would gladly give the shirt off his back to help someone in need. His kind spirit, caring nature, and willingness to help others left a lasting impression on all who knew him. David was a loving soul whose warmth, humor, and friendship will be deeply missed.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Garnet Mae Gillis; his adoptive parents, Frank LeRoy Gillis and Eleanor Marie (Fike) Gillis; two sisters, Susan Jackson and Eva “Christine” Mae; and two nephews, David Jackson and Kenny Jackson.
David is survived by his son, David Gillis Jr.; his daughter, Tammi Hergert; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two brothers, Bobby Jones and Dan Gillis; one sister, Cathy Gillis; several nieces and nephews; and a lifelong family friend, Clarissa Farmer.
David will be remembered for his creativity, generosity, sense of humor, and the love he shared with his family and friends. Though he will be greatly missed, his legacy of kindness and compassion will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were blessed to know him.
