Anne Maxfield Strahl, 85, died January 15, 2016, in her Batesville home. Born November 16, 1930, she was the daughter of Effie Sisk Maxfield and John Fred Maxfield. The Maxfields were an early mercantile and banking family in Batesville. Charles Wesley Maxfield and Mary Maxfield (Mrs. Conway Fitzhugh) were two of the eight members of the first graduating class of Arkansas College in 1876. Anne attended Arkansas College for one year before transferring to Iowa State University where she earned her bachelor's degree in home economics. She then returned to Batesville where she worked for AP&L doing home demonstrations of appliances before beginning a four-decade career teaching home economics, speech, and music at Southside High School. During those years she was beloved mentor to countless young students and the founding director of the choral group "The Southern Belles." She served for many years as organist for the Batesville Christian Science Church. She was a member of First United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Harold David (Booter) Strahl, a son David Maxfield Strahl, and a daughter Meredith Anne Strahl. Survivors include two first cousins, Malinda Maxfield Tulloh of Spartanburg, South Carolina, and Sarah Maxfield Smither of Ashville, North Carolina. Memorials may be made to Maxfield Park Foundation or the Humane Society of Independence County.
