Edna Ernestine Huckaba, 83, of Southside died on Saturday, September 6, 2014 at a local nursing home. She was born on May 13, 1931 in Floral, AR. She was the daughter of Earl and Edna Lawrence Altom. She is survived by one brother, Kenneth Altom (Freda) of Southside; three nieces, Donna Gay (Scott) of Pleasant Plains, Paula Hagan (Don) and Kimberly England (Bobby) both of Southside; one nephew, Greg Altom (Terry) of Southside and many great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Joe Huckaba; one brother, Lawrence Earl Altom; one sister, Jacqueline Vaughan and one nephew, Christopher Altom.
She was a 1948 graduate of Pleasant Plains High School, now Midland, and a graduate of what was Arkansas College, graduating with a teaching degree. She began her teaching career at Concord School then taught at
Wilburn. After that, she taught for 25 years in Roswell, NM and is remembered as being a strict, but fair teacher. She spent her summers here with her family. When she retired, she moved back home to Southside and remained here. Her nieces and nephew will fondly remember her as someone who took us swimming (even though she couldn't swim at all), took us to the store and bought us soft drinks and candy, smelled of Estee Lauder perfume and dressed well, and in general made summer a fun time.
Funeral services will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church at Southside on Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. with Brother Bob Dailey officiating. Pallbearers are Greg Altom, Kyle Altom, Hairl Anderson, Roy Milligan, Johnny Roberts, Ricky Altom, and Johnny Roberts. Honorary Pallbearers are Byron Southerland and John McLaughlin. Visitation will be held at the church beginning at 9:00 A.M. to service time. Burial will be at Kyler Cemetery.
