VL Simmons, 89, of Southside passed away in his sleep on Sunday October 23, 2016. He was born February 10, 1927 to Hansel Odell Simmons and Robert "Bobbie" (Swaim) Simmons. He was a World War II Veteran who served in Germany. VL retired from the Independence County Road Department crew. He was of the Baptist faith and is remembered with love and affection by his family and friends for his easy going personality, love of animals, and keen sense of humor. VL loved nature and working outdoors.
VL is survived by his daughter Sue Kaufman and her husband Gary of Chattanooga, Tennessee; his son Robert Simmons and his wife Debbie of Southside; six grandchildren: Shauna Hill and her husband Mike, Christopher Mohlke and his wife Anna, James Simmons and his wife Gina, Tom Moore, Tim Moore, and Chris Moore; eight great-grandchildren: Colton Rogers, Shayla Brown, Jessica Simmons, Cody Simmons, Jeanetta Mohlke-Hill, Nathaniel Hill, Theodore Hill, and Tobiah Mohlke.
He was preceded in death by his parents Hansel Odell and Robert "Bobbie" Simmons; his wife Mary Ellen (Washam) Simmons; one sister Unita Tummons; and one son James Simmons.
Visitation will be Wednesday October 26, 2016 from 10-11 AM at the Willis Funeral Service Chapel with the funeral service to follow at 11 AM with Bro. Josh Pippenger officiating. Interment will follow at the Locust Grove Cemetery.
Pallbearers include: Tim Tummons, Chris Mohlke, James Simmons, Cody Simmons, Fred Mohlike, and Tony Pierce.
The family would like to thank his wonderful caregivers: Hazel Cranfill, Lonafay Lancaster, Leona Smith, Sharon Scott, the staff at Absolute Care, and the staff at Legacy Hospice for the care given to our loved one.
